Mark Webber gains Pole Position, is given a time penalty and still takes the chequered flag – a race that has it all?
Mark Webber won his first Grand Prix after taking pole position, but he didn’t have it all his own way! Between the lights glowing green and reaching the first corner he had dropped to third place and had had his car hit twice!
First Rubens Barichello – who had started in second – charged past, the pair making contactas Webber tried to push him towards the pit lane wall. Then Lewis Hamilton flew past moving from 5th on the grid thanks to his KERS boost. Unfortunately for Hamilton he clipped Webbers front wing with his right rear tyre puncturing it. For the second time in a row at the Nurgburgring he had to limp back to the pits at the end of lap one.
Mclarens’ hopes rested with Kovalainen, but his car lacked the up-to-date parts of Hamilton’s and as a result slowed the rest of the field from third. This played into Webber and Barrichello’s hands as they quickly built up an un-assailable lead – even though Webber had to come into the pits for his time penalty following the crash with Barrichello.
At the end Red Bull finished with their third one-two of the year with Button finishing in 5th position. This cuts Button’s lead at the top of the Championship to 21 points with Vettel in Second and Webber another 1.5 points behind. Brawns lead at the top of the Constructors Championship is now down to 19.5 points over Red Bull.
